Kanva Ashram

This place from where India got its name “Bharat” because it is the birth place of King Bharat, is also the place where Shakuntala and King Dushyant (from the Sanskrit text Abhigyan Shakuntalam) fell in love. Kanvashram is of historical, cultural and archaeological significance. It is located on the bank of river Malini about 14 km from Kotdwara and about 30 km from JUSGAR. It is said that about 10,000 pupils used to receive education in the ashram of Kanva Rishi in ancient times and since then the valley or ghati is known as Kanvaghati.

Maharishi Charak Tapsthali

This tapasthali (place of penance) of Rishi Charakh is 18 km from JUSGAR and is situated on a hill top so the hill is locally known as “Charekh ka danda” (Mountain of Charakh). Kalagarh Dam

Kalagarh dam, also known as Ramganga dam as it is built across river Ramganga, is a tributary of holy Ganga river, just 30 kms from JUSGAR. It is situated 3 km upstream in Kalagarh, Pauri Garhwal. Located within Jim Corbett National Park it is a very beautiful and scenic place visited by a large number of migratory birds during winters.

Kotdwar

Kotdwar is a tehsil in Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand. Its old name was Khoh Dwar, which means the gateway of the river Khoh: as Kotdwar is located on the bank of river Khoh so it was named Kotdwar. It is situated in the south-western part of state and is one of the main entrance points in the state of Uttarakhand. Kotdwar Railway station, established in 1890 by the British, is one of the oldest railway stations of the country. Being the gateway of Himalayan Region, Kotdwar rail route was used for timber transportation from Himalayan Region. The first passenger train ran in the year 1901. It is just 17 kms from JUSGAR. One can enjoy shopping and movies here.

Lansdowne

Just 28 km from JUSGAR and one of the quietest hill stations of India, Landsdowne has been popular since British times. Lansdowne is unlike other hill stations as it is well-connected with motorable roads but remote in its own way. It is situated at an altitude of 1,700 m above sea level and surrounded by thick oak and blue pine forests. Lansdowne got its name from Lord Lansdowne, who was the then Viceroy of India during the period of 1888 - 1894. Presently, Lansdowne has the command office of the Garhwal Rifles division of the Indian Army. Lansdowne is one of the most popular hill stations of Garhwal region when it comes to weekend destination.

Haridwar
